Oktoberfest 2022 Confirmed
It’s official – the 2022 Oktoberfest in Munich is confirmed! In a statement made at 12:30pm local time in Germany, Munich’s mayor Dieter Reiter made the announcement on Bavarian TV.

After a two-year hiatus, this is fantastic news for not just the thirsty beer lovers, but those involved with the festival itself. The vast majority of beer tent hosts and festival exhibitors were in favor of the 2022 festival going ahead, as were prominent politicians incl. Bavaria’s Minister-President Markus Söder and Germany’s Economic Minister Hubert Aiwanger.
Beer tent construction for the 2022 festival will begin in May, 2 months earlier than usual.

*** Update from Munich on April 29th ***
The city of Munich has not made an official announcement yet on the status of Oktoberfest 2022, but is expected to really, really soon. So, grab a beer and sit tight!
Because Oktoberfest takes such a long time to plan and construct (literally), the good news is that an official announcement will come sooner rather than later. For the last two years, they have made the decision around April/May.
In the meantime, here is what the Oktoberfest 2022 situation looks like according to word on the Munich streets.
*** Update from Munich on April 20th ***
As of April 20, 2022, the overall view that Oktoberfest 2022 will happen is optimistic and sources say (use Google Translate) we should have our answer as early as next week!
Wiesn boss Clemens Baumgärtner, who has been super optimistic this whole time, remains confident that there will be a 2022 Oktoberfest. His exact words were: “I’m more confident than ever.” (use Google Translate). He even says, “I’m looking forward to the Wiesn 2022.” We definitely second that.
However, the Lord Mayor of Munich Dieter Reiter is the one who has final say. While he has been less-than-enthusiastic in recent times, he seems to finally be leaning away from the dark side. He still needs to have a few meetings before he decides, but we know he’ll do the right thing. Right Reiter? RIGHT?! At least he’s got Clemens Baumgärtner whispering in his ear.
How exactly a 2022 Oktoberfest would look as far as restrictions, safety protocol, and/or special requirements, is still undecided but considering the EU zone no longer requires proof of vaccination to enter, getting into the festival grounds for Oktoberfest may not either.
*** Update from Munich on February 9th ***
According to Bavaria’s public broadcasting service, should Oktoberfest 2022 take place, it will do so with additional provisions. For instance, Oktoberfest will only admit fully vaccinated individuals and/or those who have recently recovered from the Covid-19 virus, with the possibility of extra testing required as well. Given that these go along with current requirements to enter and travel around the EU, this shouldn’t come as a surprise.
Munich’s Lord Mayor Dieter Reiter had previously expressed his desire for no kind of “altered” Oktoberfest. In other words, there is no plan for Oktoberfest that would require mask-wearing, social distancing, or capacity restrictions, in order to keep it the same, badass bierfest it has always been. The proposed “No Wiesn for Everyone” plan would ensure this format.
Reiter has also stated that he fully plans to go ahead with Oktoberfest 2022 as he wants no more than two Oktoberfest cancellations during his time in office. (And I think it’s safe to say we all agree!)
Reiter says plainly: “If someone does not want to be tested or vaccinated, then they will not be able to go to the Oktoberfest in 2022 either.” For all involved in Oktoberfest planning, safety is the number one priority.
So though we don’t have an official announcement on the status of Oktoberfest 2022, the powers in charge have assured us they’re doing everything they can to ensure it will take place and in the safest way possible.
Budgets are already being drawn up with estimated cost increases due to the need for additional security and officers to enforce the new protocol plus the possibility of issuing wristbands to those who are allowed in. While costs will go up quite a bit for the hosts and landlords, they assure us it won’t mean too much of an increase on beer prices and such. (Bless!) [source]
